A CHARMING RENOVATION FOR A CHARACTER-FILLED HOME.
An extensive house renovation with a second-storey plus addition in Lindfield on Sydney’s leafy Upper North Shore.
The owners of this charming home, located on one of Lindfield’s prettiest streets, were adamant that this extensive renovation was sympathetic to the original architecture of the property and didn’t take away any of the charm and character. It was important the second-storey addition blended seamlessly with the original home, giving the appearance that it had “always been there”.
The family had outgrown the original house and needed more space to accommodate their children who were now young adults. Most importantly, the parents wanted a private area where they could escape and relax. And, as with any growing family, more bathrooms were a priority!
The home had undergone a partial renovation in the 1980s. The owners wanted most of this replaced as it dated the property. Thankfully, some of the property’s original period features hadn’t been removed in the 1980s renovation and we were able to work with them in this renovation. These included utilising original windows, floorboards, skirting and cornices. Sadly, some of the original timber floorboards needed to be replaced with new, engineered timber to match.
The second-story addition became a large, impressive, parent’s retreat featuring the master suite, separate sitting area, ensuite bathroom, walk-in robe, study and balcony.
The entire back of the property was removed (see photo below) to extend the kitchen and family room plus add large laundry. The old entertaining deck was removed and replaced with an expansive undercover deck complete large bi-fold doors, skylights and heaters, transforming it into another entertaining area that can be used all year round, no matter the weather.
The downstairs renovation of the original house included the addition of a new ensuite bathroom for one of the original bedrooms plus a full renovation and upgrade of the original bathroom.
We added a pergola over the existing spa area and carport, all in keeping with the main house. The driveway was redone, complete with a gentle curve.
We are very pleased to report that the owners were ecstatic with the finished result and so too were the neighbours. It was not only the property owners who wanted the charm and character of this beautiful home retained but so too did the local residents.
